The final two chapters of The Amatus and the Altus are off to beta readers today! As this is the last huzzah for this project, I've invited all seven of my previous betas, plus two new and excited readers to comment on the WIP between now and next Friday, December 20.

I've heard back from one already, who said they thought it was great! Like, they usually have one or two suggestions, but nothing needed this time. The absolute rush of knowing a reader loves my work is amazing. It's like escaping the Collector base of ME2, running for the evac, not sure if you're gonna make that last jump.

Bum, bum, bum; bum-bum-bum-bum, the drums pound, then the screeeeeeeching leap! And, if you cultivated a good relationship with a loyal squadmate, they pull you into the shuttle so you don't die and the galaxy actually gets saved.

Okay, maybe that analogy got away from me, but, man, I get the same rush from achieving writing milestones as I do from that scene. I might catch some Kate or Marcus Shepard footage myself later, but here you can immediately enjoy a youtube clip by Cstyle12 (link jumps to 18:40 mark) of Shep, Garrus, and Tali escaping the Collector base.

First off, I am working on creating a posting guide that will hopefully not only get us all on the same page expectations-wise but also give us newbs a better idea of what we're even meant to do here. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get that up. But I also have like sixteen other things that have to be done tomorrow, so there's that.

On which note, anyone else feeling really frustrated because holidays and writing don't seem to be compatible? I'd really love to be writing, but especially as a parent, I am abso-fucking-lutely swamped with making the holidays happen and have no brain energy left ever. I'd like it to be January stat.

displaced_dumblr_authors circle! The following is an edited version of my Tumblr post from earlier today, "I’m still Mass Effect-obsessed, too!" That version includes screenshots.

Since [Tumblr's] searches and filters are more banjaxed than ever, I’ve been posting more often to signal boost artists, writers, and other fellow fans. It’s been mostly Dragon Age, because of my current fan fiction WIP’s, critique partners, and role as an assistant moderator on the Lost n Found Dragon Agers Discord server - message me, check my archive, or browse my tag “Lost n Found Dragon Agers” for the open invite link. We’re up to 142 members and would love more! I also participated in Drdagon4ge Day on December 4.

At the same time, I am still a HUGE Mass Effect fan!

In the last few days, I’ve reblogged or queued up Jeff “Joker” Moreau gifs, art of Grunt and the threasher Maw, and femshep wearing N7 shorts. I hope to share more before logging off of [Tumblr] on all devices for the duration of Monday’s protest (12-17-18). I love N7 Day! November 7!

Back in 2013, shortly after the 2012 release of the special edition trilogy box set, I played ME3 over and over again, forty hours a week, in addition to working full time and tending to my other responsibilities. I don’t game as much lately, but Commander Shepard remains an essential part of my identity as a gamer and a human living here and now.

I haven't left Tumblr (yet), but when the time comes, the #1 thing I will miss is the ding of message notifications on my phone and laptop. It's how I first connected with lovely mutuals like

red_eris and

raymurata , and I'm sad and angry that Ray has been censored from Tumblr's searches, even for messaging from a mutual. I can still click the message bubble directly from her blog, and reblog stuff if I go to her archive, but it's not the same, Tumblr hides most of her stuff, and it will be worse starting Monday, December 17, 2018.

I will be participating in the log off protest (Tumblr link) that starts at 12 a.m. EST on December 17 (9 p.m. PST on December 16). I'll be logged off of Tumblr on all my devices and not visit any part of Tumblr even as a guest on that date. I will be vocal about the protest on other social media on December 17, then sign back in to Tumblr on December 18 to check in with mutuals.

A few related notes about who owns Tumblr, legal shenanigans, the FCC, and net neutrality:

Since 2017, Verizon has owned Yahoo, and therefore owns Tumblr. They were headed toward banning adult content even before Apple pulled their app from the app store. Apple is in court again, facing monopoly charges, as they effectively dictate what sites, services, and apps millions of consumers can access.

Hi, I'm Bear!

Most of you probably don't know me because I'm a big ol' fandom hermit and haven't made a whole lot of actual contributions outside of the occasional meta or resource post.

My one big fic is This is Fine, a self-insert Inquisitor story that plays a lot with meta knowledge and parallel storylines. I've been working on it consistently for two and a half years and at long last, the end is approaching. (Just getting toward the end of the Arbor Wilds storyline now.)

Hi! *waves* I'm Pen, most of you know me, but I'm just gonna follow Red's lead and throw down a WIP list. I probably won't be posting much, here -- I'm a little more involved in the Pillowfort side of the exodus -- but the more people we don't lose, the better!

My work is generally best described as some combination of adventure, slice of life, and erotic comedy. I've got a nasty habit of grabbing loose threads and pulling until canon unravels, so canon-divergent AU is basically my middle name. (~~Also an artist working on the Advent challenge -- 25 finished images in the first 25 days of December -- so my writing output is presently in the damn toilet.~~)

In the queue:

A Comedy of Assholes: A Dragon Age fanfic series, including the infamous Rhapsody in Ass Major, that has been going on for almost four years and a few million words. Three Hawkes, both siblings lived, all the potential Wardens survived the Blight, and now two Inquisitors. Magic, mayhem, and pornography! Adventure all around! (Currently working on 'No One Expects the Assquisition', the main Inquisition fic.)

Vexation of Spirit: The crossover from hell: Criminal Minds/The Lone Gunmen/Shadow Unit, started in June, now about 300k. Wraps a few LGM threads I never much liked into a neat little bow (~~fuck you very much Jump the Shark~~), and rapidly devolves into a sex farce, with side plots featuring serial killers, television-quality depictions of hacking, anomalous individuals, and anti-capitalist activism. (Currently working on 'Interlude: Gathering Evidence', in which our heroes try to profile their enemy and Susanne breaks up with Byers.)

... Yeah, I'm not really working on shit right now. It's December.

Welcome to Work in Progress (WIP) Wednesday and Write it Wednesday! It's 5 p.m. Central time and I haven't posted excerpts yet, but I hope to share at least one later today. Thanks to RedEris for encouraging me to check out Dreamwidth! In this post, I'm following her lead on sharing about current writing projects. Mine are Dragon Age and Mass Effect:

I'm perhaps best known for The Amatus and the Altus on AO3, a Dragon Age: Inquisition romance staring Dorian Pavus with Inquisitor Karl Trevelyan, and Scout Lace Harding with Karl's brother Leo, heir to the Bann of Ostwick. Chapters 34 and 35 should finish the story! I had hoped to post by December 4 (yesterday), but postponed that for Dragon4ge Day prep and dealing with the havoc a certain hellsite is making atm.

Out of the Wilds is a posted short story of what chapter 34 might have been, before I added several more characters and completely changed the plot progression of the final battle. ;)

Warrior Dove is a story I put on the back burner many moons ago and wish I had at least started posting earlier. It stars the adult grandchildren of King Alistair and Inquisitor Margie Trevelyan and would be part of my Beyond Circle, Beyond Order series. I hope to finish it eventually.

I have some other short stories in need of further brainstorming or total revision, including Alistair stepping through a weather-controlled portal into the modern day, and Alim Surana coming to Skyhold with his boyfriend Zevran. Zev and Alim's first short story, To Hold: Zevran and Alim, is on AO3.

I also want to get back to these two Mass Effect romances ASAP:

There's No Shepard Without Vakarian: An ME3 Shakarian romance from the viewpoints of James Vega, Kimberly Shepard, and Garrus Vakarian.

We'll Fly Again: Alone and lonely after the committee inquiry into the Normandy's destruction, Flight Lieutenant Jeff "Joker" Moreau is shocked to learn his lover may live again. A rogue black ops group plans to bring Marcus Shepard back to life, and Jeff is going to make sure whoever—or whatever—wakes up in that lab isn’t a mindless tool of Cerberus.

Those are the stories I think about the most right now.

When I finish The Amatus and the Altus (I hope this month), I might have a meltdown. It's been such a big part of my writing, blogging, gaming, and video posts . . . I started posting chapters on April 23, 2017, and was working on it well before that. I created Karl on the PS3 on July 29, 2016, and recreated him on Xbox One one May 17, 2017 - but didn't finish that playthrough until November 18, 2018. In my initial brainstorming, Karl and Leo's personalities were practically swapped. Now, I can't imagine them any other way.

So since my goal here is for people to continue to have the social interactions that are such valuable fuel for writers, I'll go first and do a little roundup of my current projects. Insofar as I'm spending much time writing at all.

My most recent piece, Greyhair, about Geralt the Witcher accidentally acquiring a cat, was gratifyingly well-received, both online and by the target audience, which was my kids. Though they did complain that it was too short. I've got two Witcher fics in progress, even though I don't know what I'm doing or what the hell my goals are even. One is a short smut piece that's mostly done, but the other is a wholeass story, at least seven chapters I'd estimate, of which I have about 2/3 of one. So like...why. Plus at least two more solid concepts for other longish Witcher stories. The series really just leaves so many good possibilities, technically speaking.

But I really feel guilty about my continued lack of progress on Little Fox, which I promised myself a long time ago I would absolutely finish. I've got to finish it, to prove to myself I can. But I'm like...halfway done and haven't touched it in months. I plotted the whole thing and lemme tell you it's good stuff but somehow plotting it all out took the discovery out of it? Sigh. I even replayed the whole game looking for inspiration, and didn't get it. The game and my story are just...too divergent.

Anyway, that's plenty to start with.
